ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the transplants would develop the kind of work force needed for the Japanese system of production. The process of developing this work force would take place in four distinct phases they are prerecruitment community socialization, recruitment socialization, work group training, and continuous in-plant culture. The transplants are involved in the conscious construction of an in- plant culture that will reinforce the principles of organization and interpersonal relationship that guided the selection and training of new employees. The efforts by the transplants to create a new worker involve both a new production system, or a way of doing work, and a new way of thinking about oneself as a worker and community member. The new production system involves changing what people do in direct production activities, and changing how indirect activities in support of production are organized.
