ABSTRACT

Once I knew a woman whose life had a tragic outcome, though what led to it might otherwise have been amusing. Very simply, her feet hurt. She was not presently standing behind counters as a salesperson, nor running up and down hospital corridors, not even shopping for a bag to match her new shoes. It was hard to find an explanation for her discomfort in her daily life. Extensive medical studies were no more enlightening. All physical findings were negative, as they say, but the pain persisted.
