ABSTRACT

The Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate of Canadian Heritage represents an approach to cultural research that is policy driven. Canadian Heritage is the national government department responsible for policies and programs related to the arts and heritage, broadcasting, the cultural industries, Canadian identity, multiculturalism, official languages, and sport. Many of the offices of Canadian Heritage have a researcher or two who are on call to produce research related to the work of that office. The Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate is the closest thing to an agency-wide research division within Canadian Heritage. When Canadian Heritage was created, the directorate was established to provide a critical mass of social science expertise and research within the department. The Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate is engaged in a number of other, multi-agency initiatives to develop an overall framework for cultural statistics.
