ABSTRACT

The Observatoire de la Culture et des Communications (OCC), a partnership of the provincial Ministry of Culture and Communications, the Council of Arts and Letters of Québec, and the Society for the Development of Cultural Enterprises, will be based within the Institut de la Statistique du Quebec (ISQ), the provincial statistics agency. The observatory will gather together in one place the production and release of statistical data that heretofore have been collected and disseminated by various sources. Eight advisory committees represent the different sectors of activity in the fields of culture and communications, the university sector, and local municipalities. Each one of the committees is, in turn, represented on the board of the observatory. The fact that a cultural observatory had been announced at the provincial level in Quebec drew attention at the national level and may well have been an impetus behind the creation of the national Canadian Cultural Observatory.
