ABSTRACT
If the continuation of human life is contingent on human beings preserving and sharing symbolic information, as clearly is the case, then changes in how people preserve and share information must have profound consequences. Despite that, only a few social theorists have analyzed the interconnectedness of communication, information technologies, and social structures. The neglect of these interconnections must be rectified if a comprehensive theory of social life is to be formulated.
