ABSTRACT

In this chapter, evidence is presented confirming that, while seldom actually observed by researchers, infant killing by adult male red howl ers [Alouatta seniculus) in Venezuela occurs frequently. In particular, it is believed that infanticide occurs coincident with many changes in adult-male membership as well as with changes in breeding status of coresident males. The data on observed and inferred cases of infanti cide permit the examination here of several hypotheses advanced to explain this behavior (see Hrdy, 1979; Sherman, 1981).
