ABSTRACT
As might be expected, the mothers' attitudes towards morality training came out particular1y clearly in relation to their feelings about punishing the child. We have already mentioned that the question 'How do you punish him when he's been naughty?' was intended to be provocative. In fact it was pardcu1arly successful, not only in finding out exactly what punishment, if any, mothers considered appropriate for oneyear-olds, but also because they frequently went on to explain and to justify their whole attitude towards smacking in general.
