ABSTRACT

The classification adopted Our use of the father's occupation to determine social class was based upon the Registrar General's classification of occupations, modified somewhat to meet our own special requirements. For the purposes of our analysis, we combined the professional and managerial Classes I and II, and we divided Class Ill into two separate classes: Class Ill WC, consisting of the white-collar workers and including also skilled manual workers who were foremen in their trade, and Class Ill Man, consisting of skilled manual workers. The result was the five-point scale shown in Table VIII.
