ABSTRACT

In the sample which we have used in the present study, for example, one of the variables most obviously bound up with social class is the age at which mothers give birth to the first child of their family. Table XI shows the average age of these mothers at their first successful confinement (miscarriages are excluded since our information on this point may not be wholly accurate), compared with their socio-economic classification.l This table also illustrates the way in which family size varies with social class.
