ABSTRACT
We have seen that middle-class mothers tend to be somewhat older than working-class mothers when they have their first baby. At first sight the average age differences shown in Table XI may not appear to be very large; when we come to interpret them, however, we find that their effect is maximized by certain strong cultural pressures which are brought to bear on young women in our society, and which in this connection seem to be largely independent of social class.
