ABSTRACT
The total investigation was designed to produce two kinds of evidence upon which we could base our final conclusions. In the first place, all the answers which the mothers gave to specific questions were classified so that the results could be analysed statistically. As this involved a great deal of cross-classification, the information from each interview schedule was transferred to a pre-coded punched card, and these cards were used for all further numerical sorting.
