ABSTRACT

As a consequence of the 1978 journey to China made by the Board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the agreements of the Chinese and U.S. governments to establish diplomatic relations and to “cooperate” in scientific and technological fields of “mutual interest” that were formalized within the month following the Board’s return home, AAAS entered into an ongoing process of scientific exchange with the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST)—including two sociological field trips that I made to China after 1978.
