ABSTRACT

When I was discharged from the hospital just before Christmas of 1945, I was still in a frail state of health, and taking only preliminary steps with the help of forearm (“Canadian”) crutches. Because my parents felt that I was not strong enough to withstand the rigors of the forthcoming winter, and that I would thrive best in a warm climate, they rented a small house for me in Miami, Florida, where, until June, I lived with Miss Balkema, who had accepted their offer to accompany and care for me during those months, along with a private nurse. My father had experienced difficulty in finding a suitable house, because renting as well as buying real estate in Miami and its environs was then largely restricted to persons who were white and Christian.
