ABSTRACT

It was an “experiment perilous” for the patients of Ward F-Second, for the physicians of the Metabolic Group, and also for me. I can still see the white, Greek-temple-style building of Harvard Medical School gleaming outside the hospital windows of the ward. Chiseled on its portico, like a cosmic signboard, was the famous Hippocratic aphorism “Life is short, the art long, occasion difficult, experiment perilous.”
