ABSTRACT

The Wobblies, Bari discovered, used two strategies: "boring from within" and "dual unionism." The first emphasized quiet organization and recruitment at the shop level; the second implied creation of an organization outside the existing union structure. Eventually the couple sold their home "for a big profit" and began renovating another. Meanwhile, "to prevent brain death," Bari helped publish an anti-nuclear power newspaper. While she was pregnant with Jessica, her activist flame rekindled, she joined Pledge of Resistance, a Quaker movement dedicated to defending the Nicaraguan Sandinistas. Attending training seminars in peaceful resistance, Bari was impressed with Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence. In January 1988 at a national Restore the Earth conference held on the Berkeley campus, Earth First! proposed using public funds to buy Palco land, creating a Headwaters Forest Wilderness Complex. Almost immediately the state director of forestry, Jerry Partain, endorsed the idea, proposing to purchase the old growth with a bond issue.
