ABSTRACT
Time passed, the grievances of exile were forgotten, and the Americans began to realize that though England might well be Babylon it was still the land of the Magna Charta. More and more they thought of themselves as Englishmen, free Englishmen. In 1700 Cotton Mather told the Massachusetts Assembly, “It is not a Little Blessing of God, that we are a part of the English Nation.”
