ABSTRACT
The birth of Agos was shaped by the conditions in which the Armenian community was living. The newspapers published in Armenian were no longer enough for us because the majority of Anatolia’s Armenians knew only Turkish and thus had no access to the Armenian press. This meant that communication inside the Armenian community had broken down. Also, the Armenian community, which until now had been a closed community, wished to open up to the outside world.
