ABSTRACT

By around 1000 BCE, the gods and ancestors had migrated to the shining heavens and the dark underworld, never to return. A new type of neurocultural control system was needed to replace them. For the sake of convenience, we can call this upgraded system the self, which is both the observing (“I”) and the observed (“me”) of the interiorized psychoscape. In this chapter, I provide some examples of the interiorization of the person.
