ABSTRACT

Why do political leaders tell us that life is more dangerous, our planet is "plundered" and "in crisis," we are running out of resources, and pollution is increasing, that is, that things are getting worse, when they are really getting better? Why do the politicians say that we need to "save the planet"? This chapter discusses some of the rhetorical devices used to communicate false messages of doom in prose, discourse, and politics.
