As noted earlier, the college in America was, in its origins, “a borrowed instrument.” ¹ For over two hundred years the American people continued to use this instrument without making fundamental changes in it. Then, in the mid-nineteenth century, they began to refashion the academic structure in a really fundamental way, and it is with this effort that we shall now deal.
