ABSTRACT
THE essential unimportance of regarding society as an organism became appa1ent to Spencer in his exposition of social types and constitutions which is one of his permanent contributions to sociology. He shows a distinct advance upon Comte in confining his investigations not to the generic and rather vague term Society, but to societies, that is, to specific and definite social aggregates possessing a distinct and recognizable structure ; and in elaborating a classification of the types and forms of societies and social relationships without 'Nhich a scientific sociology is impossible.
