ABSTRACT
There are numerous existing and proposed hazardous chemical waste sites, but a dearth of money and scientific knowledge to investigate the ef fects of all of these sites. An important short-term research goal is thus to determine if available medical, environmental, land use, and demographic data can provide clues about the effects of hazardous waste sites. This research is more important to planners than to most people because plan ners and elected officials will bear the brunt of dealing with a hostile public about the effects of sites at the local government scale. Furthermore, plan ners are likely to be involved in such research because they control or have access to much of the data.
