ABSTRACT
The Renaissance sculpted a large part of the modern political value system. To what extent and in what ways did the humanists articulate the values of guild and civil society? What moral status did they assign to them? As with the scholastics and jurists, it is in relation to their conceptions of the city or city-state, and of popular government within the city, that these matters were dealt with.
