ABSTRACT

The Talmud had a great deal of respect for aphorisms used by the people and even tried to demonstrate that many common sayings had a basis in Scriptures. Each of the sayings and aphorisms quoted in the Talmud are intended to reflect a general truth about the world and about life. The Talmud loves aphorisms that count and measure. The Talmudists were obviously referring to conditions that existed in their times. The Talmud uses the word kav to signify measures. Many doctors refuse to treat sick people who are poor. Some are too arrogant to consult with others when they are unsure of a diagnosis and thereby may actually contribute to sickness and death. Piety is generally considered to be a virtue, however, when it comes to fools, particularly those who do not understand the nature of true piety, there really is such a thing as being too pious.
