ABSTRACT
History means inquiry. Such was Herodotus’s usage. As the discipline of history developed, the inquiry tended to be into the past. In principle, however, there is little reason why it cannot also be extended into the future. All of history, of course, is subject to contingency. Prediction is simply a probability estimate with an extraordinary number of variables.
