ABSTRACT

Several years had passed after Schmiel’s flight, and one evening, shortly before we left the village of Werbiwci, some peasants came in and said that they had seen Schmiel at the horse market. Then Uncle Leiser came to congratulate us—he had spoken to Schmiel at the market, he should soon be home. Then a few of his old comrades and friends came in—they had seen Schmiel at the market too and wanted to speak to him. Elikune from the village inn also came to congratulate us and to learn what had brought Schmiel home from the wide world—he too had seen Schmiel at the market.
