ABSTRACT

My eldest brother was named Schachne Eber. He was big and strong, quiet and ambitious, and very industrious. No one ever saw him sitting around or hanging about gossiping. Even on the Sabbath and on holidays when work was forbidden, he had ways of keeping himself occupied. He went into the fields to look at the grain or inspect the cattle, or into the shop to count over and rearrange the wares in their boxes and chests. He was really the head of the house. Father treated him as if he, the father, were the younger brother, because Schachne Eber’s judgment on everything was better.
