ABSTRACT

To place Freud i n this tradition is the burden of the opening sections of this book. At times i t may seem as i f the details d id not matter all that much and were perhaps of interest only to historians. But even as details i n a detective story may appear to be of doubtful relevance un t i l one finds much later that they really were crucial, much of the material in these early sections turns out to be crucial when we get to Adler and to Jung.
