ABSTRACT

L ike no one before h im, Freud called attention to the formative influence o f sibling relationships, to the problems created by the b i r th of a younger sibling, and to the common admixture of hatred in sibling love. Before Freud, most people w o u l d have denied that they had ever felt hatred for their brothers and sisters or parents, and insofar as they realized that they had such feelings, or even that at one time long ago they had felt a deep resentment of that k ind , they would have felt guil ty on that account. Since Freud, "ambivalence" is a commonplace, and very large numbers of people recognize that i t is quite normal to have mixed feelings-especially for those who are closest to us.
