ABSTRACT

I f Adler was unsuccessful i n some ways, why is i t that he was so successful i n having large numbers of people accept his image of Freud as an intolerant dogmatist and reductionist? When one inquires why so many people feel so sure that Freud was that k ind of a man, one finds that their view is based on Freud's alleged excommunication of Adler and Jung. Ironically, Adler

d id not claim to have been excommunicated. He insisted both that he had never been a disciple and that he himself decided to break w i t h Freud, and not the other way around. Nevertheless, although Freud is incomparably better known, Adler bruised his heel.
