ABSTRACT

O f course, the fact that Freud could deal w i t h the break once, very briefly, i n 1914 and then be done w i t h i t , whi le Jung had such a hard t ime of i t does not prove that Freud's account is right whi le Jung's many attempts to explain i t can be dismissed. Obviously, the break was less important for the older man who played the role of the father and had more than one son than i t was for the younger man. I t may help to recall the break between Nietzsche and Richard Wagner, in 1878. Fu l ly ten years later, Nietzsche published The Case of Wagner, and st i l l after that he composed Nietzsche contra Wagner. Had Wagner at all seen fit to describe the break, one page might w e l l have sufficed h im; but i t does not follow that this page wou ld have been more accurate or revealing than Nietzsche's two short books.
