ABSTRACT

This is a truism regarding so-called Renaissance men. I t is fairly obvious in the cases of Leonardo and Michelangelo, Goethe and Nietzsche. But none of the nine major figures considered in this tri logy had only one face. I n no case have I made a sustained effort to show all their faces, nor does i t really make sense to say that any one has, say, ten faces, neither more nor less. The point is rather that we should go out of our way to find a few and see how they are of one piece and reveal a single mind .
