I t immediately makes many people bristle because i t conflicts w i t h their preconceptions or their associations w i t h either the man or the epithet. The epithet, o f course, can be defined carefully to show just what one means and does not mean. But the statement remains at most an abbreviation, and when it is challenged i t must be spelled out. I n this volume, I think, I have spelled i t out.
