ABSTRACT

ThelevelsofsomeofthelakesinAfricahaveundoubtedly beenaffectedbyearth-movementsandvolcanicdams.But evenwheretectonicandvolcanicagenciescanbeexcluded otherclimaticfactorsbesidesrainfallareliabletocontrolthe levelsoflakes.Ithasbeenestimatedforexamplethat85per centofthewaterenteringLakeVictoriaannuallyislostby evaporation(Brooks,1925).Ageneralloweringoftemperature withconsequentreductionintherateofevaporationinthis partofAfricawouldthereforeresultinarisingofthelevelof thelakewithouttherebeinganyincreaseinrainfall.
