INTHEYEARthatLyellpublishedhisGeologicalEvidenceo f the Antiqui!)'o f Man(1863),BruceFoote(1914;Piggott,1950,p.15) oftheGeologicalSurveyofIndiadiscoveredapalaeolithic implementnearMadrasandrecognizeditasessentiallysimilar tothosefoundbyBoucherdePerthesintheancientgravelsof theSommewhichhadestablishedtheexistenceofmanin EuropeduringthePleistoceneperiod.Foote'sdiscoverywas thefirstofmanyshowingthatpalaeolithiccultureswitha certainbasicuniformityextendedfarbeyondtheconfinesof EuropethroughoutthegreaterpartofAfricaandmuchofAsia.
