Youthmovementsbeginwitha"revolutionofrisingexpectation"duringanageofpoliticalreform.TheoriginalrevolutionarystudentmovementhadariseninGermanyahalfcenturyearlieroutofhopesraised bythereformsinPrussia.Americanstudentrevoltsacenturylater weretogrowoutoftherenewedsenseofpoliticalpossibilitygenerated bytheKennedyeraandthecivil-rightsmovement.Inlikemanner, exaggeratedyouthfulexpectationsofchangeunderAlexanderIIledperhapsinevitably-todisillusionmentdeepeningintodespaironcehis reformscametobeseenaspartialandincomplete.
