ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the perception of parenting by fathers and mothers in a West African community, the Nso of Cameroon. Prior to delving into the core concern of the chapter, however, two pertinent topics will be briefly discussed. Accordingly, in the first part of the chapter, a critique of social science research of parenting in African societies is attempted. In the second part, I endeavor to present an Afrocentric view on parenting. Finally, in the third part, the majority and primary focus of the chapter, I report and discuss a case study of maternal and paternal perceptions of parenting in Nso, one of several Fondoms (Kingdoms) in the Grassfields of Cameroon.
