ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter deals with expectations in a descriptive way. Their meaning, and some of the elementary notions involved in them, are brought into focus to facilitate their subsequent formalization. The stress, however, is laid on using suitable words to describe them, rather than on giving these words a content which would suit any particular theory.
