ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that Spanish people had, and still have, a deep love for the island of Cuba and to a large extent for the people of Cuba. Spain did not appear to be devastated when the country lost the Viceroyalty of New Spain, which included Mexico, a good portion of today’s western United States, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Costa Rica, even though this loss represented a territory of approximately nine times the size of Spain itself.
