ABSTRACT

The Ten Year War had been a closely fought contest, but Spain’s treachery insured their victory. Spain had agreed to amnesty for all Cuban patriots in the Pact of Zanjón, only to add, after the peace treaty was signed: “… amnesty for all Cuban patriots who go into exile.” The Guerra Chiquita was stillborn. Both wars had been lost for lack of political leadership. That political and leadership vacuum would be filled by José Martí and to a different extent by Juan Gualberto Gómez. 1
