ABSTRACT
The purchases of Louisiana and Florida as well as the Mexican-American War, were not free of opposition. Several antiexpansionism movements protested against U.S. empire building, citing the fear that continued expansionism would make the United States a target of international power politics. Others held the view that expansionism was antidemocratic and violated the spirit of the U.S. Constitution.
