ABSTRACT
Dostoevsky’s most disturbing character is Ivan Karamazov. His struggle reflects the failure of human beings to find their place in the world and to understand the meaning of life. Ivan is devastated by the overwhelming presence of evil. What kind of world is this, Ivan despairs, in which little children are tortured? What kind of meaning can this life have, if the world – and its Creator – is so incomprehensible and unjust?
