ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a selection of prominent non-state research centers, to illustrate several distinct productive models supporting collaborative research. Nuclear weapons are a prime concern. The proposals developed by the authors of Universal Compliance epitomize comprehensive thinking about one facet, proliferation, of the nuclear weapons problem. the authors identify "obligations of universal compliance," offer strategy recommendations, and say how they would apply these to regional conflicts. Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) work's central importance for denuclearization design is apparent from the many references in this text to nuclear weapon and fissile material accounting. As NRDC describes it with the publication of the first volume of the Nuclear Weapons Databook in 1984, NRDC established itself as the preeminent supplier of comprehensive and accurate data about nuclear arsenals. Monterey Institute of International Studies is a training institution, offering a Certificate in non-proliferation studies, and a center of research, gathering and presenting data and assessments through an ambitious publications program.
