ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how AMBUSH arranges marriages and generates fertility within those marriages. Male age-specific fertility rates in AMBUSH are simply a function of the fertility of their wives. The input parameters used to generate this batch of simulations can be classified as: rules of simulation, set of input parameters, probabilities for which marriages are the unit of analysis rather than individuals. The fertility parameters are made up of a number of variables: age-specific fertility rates, ages of parents, and a number of measures of reproductive performance. The chapter shows that artificial populations with demographic parameters mirnic the Dobe !Kung, are viable stable populations that maintain their age distribution, proportions of persons married, differences in age between spouses, and fertility performance of the two sexes over time despite random fluctuations within and among simulations.
