ABSTRACT

A subculture of delinquency is a setting in which the commission of delinquency is common knowledge among a group of juveniles. The delinquent subculture is the modern sociological rendition of the positivist assumptions regarding delinquency and crime. Delinquent action is the predictable outcome of the values, norms, and sentiments implicit in the delinquent subculture, as portrayed by Albert Cohen. Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin are the contemporary depicters of the delinquent subculture. The values and norms implicit in the subculture of delinquency are obviously related to delinquencies, and these values and norms obviously depart in some manner from conventional traditions. If the subculture of delinquency were committed to delinquency, there would be little shame or guilt felt upon apprehension. The delinquent especially resents the imputation of misdeeds to the significant others of his immediate familial environment. A common situation of delinquents is that of selecting victims.
