ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 introduced the historical cultural context and meaning of drug use in American society between Progressivism and the New Deal. In this chapter, the social negotiation of “pharmaceutical fact” is presented to conceptualize the meaning of drugs as a therapeutic modality.
