ABSTRACT
The attempt to construct an evolutionary model of personality-culture relations analogous to those that have proved fruitful in the comparative aspects of population biology was originally based on the assumption that, as in that more advanced field, our subject matter concerns statistical distributions of individual characteristics and the selective operation of environments. Intergenerational transmission of characteristics, selective pressures on individuals and populations, processes of adaptive equilibrium and adaptive change, are additional foci of common concern. The first part of an evolutionary model designed especially for relations between personality and the sociocultural system is presented in this chapter. Initially the focus is on the processes of personality development and socialization, and the basic concepts are personality genotype. 1 personality phenotype, and deliberate socialization.
