ABSTRACT

All of you who have come to China probably know that recently some students have taken to the streets. Does this mean that China's political situation is not stable?

Here I want to emphasize that the basic slogans of the marching students are "Support the Communist party," "Support socialism," "Support the Constitution," "Uphold the reforms," "Push forward democracy," and "Oppose corruption." I believe that this reflects the basic attitude of the majority of the marching students toward the party and government-namely, they are both satisfied and dissatisfied. They are by no means opposed to our basic system. What they want is that we eliminate the defects in our work. They are very satisfied with the accomplishments of the past tee years of reconstruction and reform, and with the progress and development of our country. But they are very dissatisfied with the mistakes we have made in our work. They want us to correct our mistakes and improve our work, which happens to be the stand of the party and government as well. We also aim to affirm the accomplishments, correct our mistakes, and move farther toward progress.
