ABSTRACT
Many observers who watched the student movement on Tiananmen Square unfold in the spring of 1989 were struck by two characteristics. One was the defiance exhibited by a massive number of presumably conforming citizens against their own autocratic government; the other was the order and solidarity manifested in the mass rallies and the selfsacrifice displayed by the people who participated in them.
