Social Malaise as Refiected in the Literature of the 1980s

In flie decade and a half of the post-Mao era (1976-90), China saw enormous changes in the political, economic, and cultural realm. In spite of repeated efforts by the government to quell the rising tide of liberalization and openness, developments went ahead apparently unabated until the brutal crackdown of 4 June 1989.
